Main Text

Font-size 12, justified text, line spacing 1.5, paragraph indent.

A long dash (—) is used in the text, except when an en dash (short dash) is needed, e.g. between pages in references (pp. 18–20), or between years (1920–1930).

When indicating a particular decade, years are indicated in numbers (in English: 1930s, in Russian: 30-е годы). In Russian, when indicating a century or year, abbreviations such as «в.» or «вв.» / «г.» or «гг.» should not be used. In Russian, centuries are indicated in Roman numerals («XIX век»); in English, centuries are indicated in Arabic numerals ("19th Century").

Quotations

When quoting texts in a foreign language you should follow its own rules about quotation marks. English texts do not contain Russian quotation marks («…»), but inverted commas (“…”). According:

When the quotation is in Russian text should be enclosed by «…», internal quotation by "…".

When the quotation is in English text should be enclosed by double inverted commas (“…”); internal quotation by single inverted commas (‘…’).

In case part of a quotation is missing, missing words should be replaced by <…> (Russian quotation) or ... (English quotation).

Examples:

«<…> но теперь ему казалось, что он всё это говорил и тогда, все эти самые слова, и что про эту “мушку” Ипполит взял у него самого, из его тогдашних слов и слез».

“‘Lord!’ he prayed, ‘show me my way; I renounce this cursed… dream of mine!’”

N.B:

- Major works title (such as novels, novellas) in English should be quoted in italics (Crime and Punishment, Faust); minor works between inverted commas (“A Gentle Creature”).

Here you can find a list of traditional translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky's titles in English.

- The author’s original emphasis in quotations is indicated by italics; the emphasis of the author of the article is indicated by bold font

In-Text Citations

In-text citations should be placed after quotations and include the last name of the author, year of publishing, volume number (if needed), page number, all enclosed in square brackets.

Examples:

[Леонтьев, 1996, с. 318]

[Wagner, 2001, p. 103]

If the reference is given to a collection of works, after the author's name should be indicated the range of the years of publication of the entire collection, volume number, and page.

Example: [Достоевский, 1972–1990, т. 3, с. 174]

If the reference is given to the whole book or to an online resource, the page number may not appear.

Example: [Касаткина, 2015]

References to archival material should be contained in footnotes. Place the footnotes at the bottom of the page in which they appear.

Example: [1] ЦГИА СПб. Ф. 19. Оп. 127. Д. 1595. Л. 590 об.–591

Illustrations

Captions to illustrations should be given both in Russian and English.

Example:

Илл. 1. Триптиха Симоне Мартини и Липпо Мемми Благовещение. Ок. 1333. Уффици. Флоренция.

Fig. 1. The Annunciation by Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi. 1333, Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

If the illustration is part of archival documentation, the source should be indicated in brackets.

- The list should contain all the sources in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author (Russian sources first, then foreign).

- Both reference lists should be numbered. Only in the Russian list, each source should be preceded by the reference as it looked in the in-text citations.
