Abstract: During the round table discussion “Teaching the Novel Crime and Punishment in Schools and Universities,” which concluded the 3rd International Online Academic Conference “Crime and Punishment: Current State of Research” (February 28, 29 – March 1, 2024), in-depth researchers, who have been teaching the novel for a long time, shared their reflections and provided answers to questions posed by teachers at all levels during the conference preparation and the conference itself. The discussion covered various topics, including where to begin the conversation about the novel with a class and how students might start their own independent research. Other points of discussion included whether the phrase “Raskolnikov was tormented by his conscience” is a factual error, how to talk about Dostoevsky’s biography, how to engage students in reading, what young people gain from reading the novel, the importance of reading (and reading Dostoevsky) for life rather than for “aesthetic development” or “enhancing educational levels,” the character of Razumikhin as a role model, the meaning of “breaking circumstances” versus “adapting to circumstances,” the price of transfiguration, and much more.
