  • Abstract: This article offers the first detailed and specific examination of the role and image of the Russian translation of A Relative of Muhammad, or The Healing Foolishness by the French writer Nicolas Fromaget, published in the 1780s, in Fyodor Dostoevsky's final novel The Brothers Karamazov. It significantly expands the existing scholarly commentary on this book, contained in the academic Complete Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky in 30 volumes and articles by Dostoevsky scholars. Fromaget's controversial book about the adventures of a sixteen-year-old Parisian schoolboy in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Ahmed III is examined primarily in relation to the character of thirteen-year-old Kolya Krasotkin, a schoolboy from Skotoprigonyevsk. A possible interpretation of the hidden plot of The Relative of Mohammed is proposed through Masonic teaching. The notion that Fromaget's novel is primarily erotic and "riotous" (as described by Krasotkin) is refuted. It is proposed to view this book as a form of educational novel, telling the story of the healing of a damaged and careless soul through a series of temptations and seductions.
