Publication Type: Research Article
Keywords: 19th-century Russian literature, Kashpirev, Dostoevsky, Strakhov, Danilevsky.
Abstract: The article examines the history of the periodical Zarya in the context of changes in the literary and journal field in the second half of the 1860s. It is shown that by uniting the Slavophiles of Moskvityanin and the “native soil” adherents of Epoch, Vasily Kashpirev and Nikolay Strakhov’s Zarya positioned itself as an “ideological journal” that inherited the ideas of Apollon Grigoriev and the Dostoevsky brothers. Particular attention is paid to the “precedents texts” that shaped the magazine’s reputation—Pisemsky’s novel People of the Forties, Dostoevsky’s story The Eternal Husband, Tolstoy’s The Prisoner of the Caucasus, as well as Danilevsky’s philosophical treatise Russia and Europe. Drawing on personal sources and memoirs, the article reconstructs the everyday life of the editorial staff and analyzes the influence of high-profile events and scandals (including the break with Nikolay Leskov and the publication, under Fet’s name, of a libelous poem) that affected the journal’s public standing. The article separately examines the strategies and tactics of the magazine that demonstrate its distinctive approach to contemporary literature and public life. Strakhov’s strategies and tactics are considered, continuing his series of essays on the “poverty” of contemporary fiction. On the one hand, Strakhov demonstratively expressed signs of respect toward the journal’s contributors, even when he did not fully agree with them. On the other hand, he showed a specific attitude toward Ivan Turgenev and Ivan Goncharov, viewing them as literary phenomena that had begun to outlive their relevance. Particularly notable were the positions of Strakhov and the journal toward representatives of the Russian émigré community: V.I. Kelsiev (one of Zarya’s contributors) and A.I. Herzen. The appendix to the article, prepared by Valeriia Kirichenko presents a complete index of the magazine’s contents during the years of its publication—from 1869 to 1872.
