  • Abstract: Most museums dedicated to the life and work of Fyodor Dostoevsky entrust illustrators of his prose with the task of creating a visual representation of his novels for their visitors. However, the more expressive the illustrations and the more powerfully they affect the visitor, the more confidently one can say that what we are dealing with is the artist's self-expression through the writer's works - and often at their expense. But how might the visual dimension of a writer's museum — so crucial to the museum space — be arranged differently? This article, drawing on the example of the exhibition "'Christ Lives in You.' Dostoevsky. The Image of the World and of Man: Icons and Paintings," held in Italy (Rimini) in 2012 and conceived on the basis of Tatiana Kasatkina's research and curatorial project, explores how, instead of the usual collection of subjective interpretations of the external plot of the novels, visitors might be presented with the sources of Dostoevsky's images - sources that allow one to perceive the structure of those images in his novels and to understand the writer's creative method. The path traced by the exhibition may serve as material for lectures and lessons on Dostoevsky's work, making it possible to illuminate, in a vivid and concentrated form, the most fundamental and most far-reaching ideas of his art.
